The United Nations: A Global Institution Facing Challenges in Enforcing Its Mandates
Abstract
We are facing unprecendented , unpredictable and anxious times with so many world wars in the world. The Third World is looming. Weapons of mass destruction modermised with innovative technology impact causing more devasting destruction. The United Nations as an international recognised world organisation mandated to promote world peace seems to to be failing in several in several instances, have not been able to call a truce amongst warring nations. With no adequate funding, no army of its own and unable to arrest indicted war criminals or prosecute heinous crimes of genocide. The UN continous relenace is in jeopardy. The author identified several challenges serving as barriers for the UN to objective its global manadate. They are : lack of adequate funding by member states, no combat army ready for deployment, era of more sophisticated weaponry, inability to deal with global conflicts, abuse of veto power, delays in security council passing resolutions, global poverty, War crimes and genocide, influence of regional organsations. The author argues that until these barriers are dismantled the legitimacy of the UN will remain contested and the UN stands to lose its global mandate of promoting world peace. We owe the next generation a more peaceful and a safer world.
